Overnight Oats

Overnight oats are a wonderful food to incorporate into your meal prep routine. They are super digestible, delicious, and SO easy. The reason I say that they are digestible is because soaking your grains acts as a wake up call for the grains dormancy; soaking the oats helps break down some of the non-digestible proteins which in turn aids in better absorption of nutrients. This also removes some of the physic acid present in all grains, which is totally normal and natural, but it does inhibit some mineral absorption. Similar to seeds, grains have a protective mechanism and contain enzyme inhibitors. Through the act of simply soaking your grains, you remove this factor and allow your body to make the most of the fuel you’ve consumed.

One of my favourite kitchen items that I could hardly manage without is nice glass jars. My personal favourite are Weak jars. Week is a German company who knows how to make super beautiful and high quality jars that I absolutely adore (can you tell I’m obsessed with jars?). That being said, go to your local thrift store, garage sales, your Mom or Grandma’s cupboard and you will find that having a few mason jars handy will do you just fine!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup rolled oats

  • About 1 cup plant-based milk (I.e. almond milk) add more milk before eating if the oats have become too thick

  • 1 tsp maple syrup

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • 1 tbsp hemp hearts

  • 1 tbsp chia seeds

Directions:

In a jar, combine all ingredients and mix well with a fork.

Place the lid on the jar and set in the fridge overnight.

In the morning, give the mixture another stir, add some additional liquid if needed, and top with berries, honey, some seeds or any other additional toppings that you desire!
